Selection

Selecting, copying, pasting and deleting objects: select everything, select by layer and type, and the clipboard commands.

Locked and frozen layers

Objects on a locked layer can be selected but not edited. Cut and Delete skip them. Objects on a frozen layer cannot be selected by Select all or Quick select.

Select all

Selects every object in the document, except those on frozen layers.

Where to find it

Home tab → Edit group → Select all. Hotkey: Ctrl+A. The button is unavailable in an empty document.

Quick select

Opens the Quick select window, which selects every object matching a layer and/or type.

Where to find it

Home tab → Edit group → Quick select. The button is unavailable in an empty document.

How to

  1. Click Quick select.
  2. Pick a Layer, a Type, or both. The line at the bottom shows "1 match" or "… matches".
  3. Click Select to replace the current selection with the matches, or Add to selection to extend it. The window closes.

Parameters

FieldMeaning
LayerA layer name, or (Any layer), the default.
TypeA kind of object, or (Any type), the default. Only kinds present in the document are listed, shown with their aliases. You can type an alias to pick its kind.

Objects on frozen layers are never matched.

If something goes wrong

MessageWhat to do
Nothing matchesThe buttons stay unavailable. Change the layer or type.

Copy

Copies the selected objects to the clipboard, together with the reference rows they point at.

Where to find it

Home tab → Edit group → Copy. Hotkey: Ctrl+C. Unavailable with nothing selected.

The command line reports "Copied … objects". Use Paste to place them.

Cut

Copies the selected objects to the clipboard and removes them, as one undo step.

Where to find it

Home tab → Edit group → Cut. Hotkey: Ctrl+X. Unavailable with nothing selected.

Objects on locked layers are left out of both the copy and the removal. The selection is cleared afterwards.

Paste

Places the copied objects with the mouse.

Where to find it

Home tab → Edit group → Paste. Hotkey: Ctrl+V. Unavailable while the clipboard holds no objects.

How to

  1. Click Paste. A preview of the objects follows the cursor, centred under it.
  2. Click in the 3D view to drop them there. The pasted objects become the selection.
  3. The tool stays armed with a fresh copy, so you can stamp several. Press Esc to leave paste mode.

The objects land on the current layer. Pasting is one undo step and also brings the reference rows the objects need. If the project already has some of those rows in a different form, you are asked once per paste what to do; cancelling the question calls the paste off.

Delete

Deletes the selected objects, as one undo step.

Where to find it

Home tab → Modify group → Delete. Hotkey: Del. Command-line aliases: e, erase. Unavailable with nothing selected.

Objects on locked layers stay in the selection but are skipped. The selection is cleared afterwards.
