Project Files
Creates, opens and saves projects and templates. A project is a *.crosscut file; a template is a *.crosscutt file that new projects can start from. The commands are in the Project group of the File tab.
New, Open and New from template replace the current project. If it has unsaved changes the program asks whether to save them first; cancelling stops the command.
New
Starts a new empty project (or one made from your default template, see Template for new projects).
Where to find it: File tab → Project group → New. Command line: new. Hotkey Ctrl+N.
Open
Opens an existing project. The file is read in the background behind a progress window, and it replaces the current project.
Where to find it
File tab → Project group → Open. Command line: open. Hotkey Ctrl+O.
How to
- Click Open.
- In the Open project dialog pick a Crosscut project; the file-type list also offers Crosscut templates. A template opens as itself, so you can change it and save it back.
- If the current project has unsaved changes, answer the question about saving them.
If the program setting to open the last file is on, the most recent file also opens by itself at start-up.
If the file cannot be opened, a warning window with the reason appears.
Save
Saves the project to its file. A project that has never been saved asks for a location, like Save As.
Where to find it: File tab → Project group → Save. Command line: save. Hotkey Ctrl+S.
The save is written in the background; the activity log shows Saving project: …. A failure appears as a warning window.
Save As
Saves the project under a new name.
Where to find it: File tab → Project group → Save As. Command line: saveas. Hotkey Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Click Save As.
- In the Save project as dialog type a name (the project name is suggested); the extension
.crosscutis added.
Closing the dialog without a name changes nothing.
New from template
Starts a new, unsaved project from a template: its layers, line types, styles, annotation scales, current properties and objects.
Where to find it
File tab → Project group → Templates drop-down → New from template.
How to
- Click New from template.
- In the New project from template dialog pick a template (
*.crosscutt; project files are offered too). The dialog opens in the folder of your default template, if one is set. - Answer the question about unsaved changes, if it comes.
Save as template
Saves the project's layers, styles, scales and objects as a template for new projects. The open project itself stays as it was: same file, same unsaved changes.
Where to find it
File tab → Project group → Templates drop-down → Save as template.
How to
- Click Save as template.
- In the Save project as template dialog type a name (suggested: the project's file name, or its name if it was never saved); the extension
.crosscuttis added.
What next
Make the template the default with Template for new projects, or start from it with New from template.
Template for new projects
Chooses the template that New starts every project from. Without one, New uses the program's own empty project.
Where to find it
File tab → Project group → the New button's menu → Template for new projects.
How to
- Click Template for new projects.
- If a template is already chosen, a question shows its path: Choose another opens the file dialog, Use the built-in one goes back to the program's own empty project, and closing the question changes nothing.
- In the Template for new projects dialog pick a
*.crosscuttfile. The choice is saved in the program settings.
