Convert Objects

Rebuild objects as another shape from their vertices, either by choosing sources by hand or by sets of rules applied to the whole project or the selection.

Convert objects

Rebuilds the objects you choose as one target shape, using their vertices. The sources are deleted, all in one undo step.

Where to find it

Tools tab → Convert group → Convert objects (Convert objects). The same button is in the Convert group of the Line and Shape tabs.

How to

  1. Click Convert objects.
  2. In the Convert to list, pick the target shape.
  3. In Source objects, add the objects to convert (their vertices build the new objects; the sources are deleted). Objects on a locked layer cannot be added.
  4. Click Convert, delete sources. The button stays disabled until a target and at least one source are chosen; the line above it says which is missing ("Pick what to convert to." or "Add the objects to convert.").
  5. A summary appears: "Converted: {0}, new objects: {1}, skipped: {2}." The source list is emptied.

A source is skipped if it is on a locked layer or yields nothing in the target shape (for example, too few vertices).

Undo

Press Ctrl+Z to bring the sources back and remove the new objects.

What next

For many objects at once, see Convert by rules.

Convert by rules

Converts objects to other shapes by sets of conditions. Each set has conditions, a target shape and a choice to delete the sources or keep them. Sets are tried from the top; an object goes to the first enabled set whose conditions it meets. The sets are remembered between runs.

Where to find it

Tools tab → Convert group → Convert by rules (Convert by rules).

How to

  1. Click Convert by rules.
  2. In Convert choose Whole project or Selected objects.
  3. Add a set with the add button under the list (tooltip "Add a set"). Use the other buttons to duplicate, delete, and move it up or down; the order matters.
  4. Set its Name, Convert to shape and options, and add conditions (see below).
  5. Check the table at the bottom, "What would be converted", which lists each object, its layer, the rule set, what it becomes and notes.
  6. Click Convert. Everything is one undo step. A summary follows: "Converted: {0}, new objects: {1}, sources deleted: {2}, skipped: {3} (on a locked layer: {4}, nothing to make: {5})."

Parameters

FieldMeaning
ConvertWhich objects the sets are tried on: Whole project or Selected objects
NameName of the set; the list shows it with "matches: N", and a set that is off is marked with a circle
Convert toThe shape the objects of the set are rebuilt as, from their vertices
Set is onA set that is off is skipped; its objects go to a later set
Delete the source objectsOff: the new objects are added and the sources stay

Conditions

All conditions of a set must hold. Add one with the drop-down and Add a condition; remove one with its delete button.

ConditionHow it is set
Object kindPick one or more kinds (an object matches if it is any of them); includes "Unreadable (unknown)"
LayerPick one or more layers
Number of pointsA comparison (=, ≠, <, >, between) and one or two numbers
Closed or open"Closed line" or "Line left open"
LengthA comparison and numbers
AreaA comparison and numbers (area enclosed in plan)
ColourThe colour the object is drawn in, as #RRGGBB; you can type one
Saved kind (unreadable objects)Text the saved kind contains, capitals ignored
Why it cannot be read (unreadable objects)Text the reason contains, capitals ignored

Under the conditions the window says: "Matches: {0} objects meet the conditions, {1} of them are taken by this set (the rest by sets above it)."

Unreadable objects

Objects this version cannot read are matched by the points found in their saved data. If sets would delete such objects, a warning appears, and before converting you are asked to confirm: everything else they hold is lost for good once the project is saved. To keep them, switch off Delete the source objects in the set.

If something goes wrong

MessageWhat to do
