Layers
The layer commands on the Home tab: pick the current layer, switch layers on and off, freeze and lock them, move objects between layers, and save a layer set-up as a named state. Most commands act on the layers of the selected objects; with nothing selected they ask you to click an object.
A locked layer's objects can still be selected, but they cannot be edited, moved or deleted. A frozen layer is hidden and its objects cannot be selected. A layer that is off is hidden. The current layer cannot be frozen.
Layer
The layer list on the ribbon. With nothing selected it shows the current layer, the one new objects land on; with objects selected it shows their layer.
Where to find it
Home tab → Layers group → the Layer list.
How to
- To change the current layer, select nothing and pick a layer in the list. A frozen layer cannot be made current; thaw it first.
- To move objects to another layer, select them and pick the layer. Objects on locked layers stay where they are.
- To change a layer without leaving the list, use the icons in its row: visible, frozen, locked and print. The row also shows the layer colour. Sub-layers are indented under their parent.
If the selected objects sit on several layers, the list shows no layer picked. Picking one layer still moves all of them. Every change is one undo step (Ctrl+Z).
The icons in a row mean:
| Icon | Tooltip |
|---|---|
| Visible | Visible — show or hide the layer in the 3D view |
| Frozen | Frozen — hide the layer and keep its objects out of selection |
| Locked | Locked — prevent selecting or editing objects on the layer |
| Print — whether objects on the layer are printed |
The current layer cannot be frozen from the list either.

Parameters
| Control | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Saved states | The saved states. Each row shows how many layers the state records; a current badge marks the state the layers match now. The list is empty ("No layer states saved yet") until you save one. |
| Name box | The name to save under or to rename to. Selecting a state fills it with that state's name. |
| Save / Replace | Saves the layers as they are now. The button is enabled when the name is not empty. If the name is already taken, it reads Replace and overwrites that state. |
| Restore | Sets the layers up as the selected state was saved. Enabled when a state is selected. |
| Rename | Gives the selected state the typed name. Enabled when the name is new and not empty. |
| Delete (bin icon) | Removes the selected state. |
Every change is an undo step, and the window follows undo and changes made elsewhere.
